How does a Plasma TV work?
They are called "plasma" displays because they use small cells containing electrically charged ionized gases, which are plasmas. 'Plasma TV' uses thousands of sealed, low Pressure Glass chambers filled with a mixture of neon and xenon. Behind these chambers are colour phosphors: one red, one blue and one green for each chamber. When energised, these chambers of 'Plasma' emit invisible ultravuilet (uv) light. The uv light strikes the red, green and blue phosphors on the back chest of the display making them produce visible light.
The transparent display electrodes, which are surrounded by an insulating dielectric material and covered by a magnesium oxide protective layer, are mounted above the cell, along the front glass plate of a 'Plasma TV'.
When the intersecting electrodes are charged 'with a voltage difference between them' an electric current flows through the wall in the cell. The released ultraviolet photons interact with phosphor material coated on the inside wall of the cell. Phosphor are substances that give of 'Light' when they are exposed to other light.
The phosphors in a Plasma TV give off coloured light when they are excited. Every pixel is made up of three separate sub-pixels cells. Each with different colour phosphors, one sub-pixel has a red light phosphor, one sub-pixel has a green light phosphor and one sub-pixel has a blue light phosphor these colours blend together to create the overall colour of the pixel.
By varying the pulses of current flowing through the different cells, the control system can increase or decrease the intensity of each sub-pixel colour to create hundreds of different combinations of red, green and blue.
The main advantage of plasma display technology is that you can produce a very wide screen, also because each pixel is lit individually. The image is very bright. The lifetime of the latest generation of plasma displays is estimated at 100,000 hours of actual display time, or 27 years at 10 hours per day. This is the estimated time over which maximum picture brightness degrades to half the original value
